1 tbsp vegetable oil
¼ cup chopped walnuts
1 lb 90% ground beef
1 medium onion diced
¼ lb mushrooms, sliced
1 16oz can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp crushed red pepper
¼ tsp salt
4 large lettuce leaves
2 6” pitas
In a large skillet heat the vegetable oil over medium high heat. Cook the walnuts until golden (3-5 minutes) drain on a paper towel.
In the same skillet, over medium high heat, cook the ground beef and onion until all the pan juices evaporate, breaking up the ground beef into small pieces.
Add the mushrooms, tomatoes, sugar, crushed pepper and salt. Heat to a boiling and reduce the heat to medium low; cook uncovered for 10 minutes.
Cut the 2 pitas in half stuff with a lettuce leaf and add the spicy beef mixture. Top with with the walnuts and serve.
