French Crumb Apple Pie

Pastry for a single 9" pie crust

¾ cup sugar

¼ cup flour

½ tsp nutmeg

½ tsp cinnamon

dash of salt

6 cups thinly sliced apples ( about 6 medium apples)

Crumb topping

2 cup flour

1 cup firm butter, cut into pieces

1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Preheat the oven to 425°

Prepare the pastry.

In a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour, nutmeg cinnamon and salt.

Stir in the apples. Add to the pastry lined pie plate.

In a medium bowl, mix the flour and brown sugar until well combined. Cut in the butter until large crumbs form.

Cover the apples with the crumb topping.

Bake for 50 minutes. Watch the pie carefully and when it has become golden brown on top, lightly cover with a large piece of foil. This prevents the crust and the crumbs from burning during the remainder of the baking time.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
