Apple Brownies Makes 12 bars

1 stick salted butter, melted and cooled

1 cup flour

1 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp baking soda

1 cup sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla

½ tsp nutmeg

½ cup chopped walnuts

2 large apples, peeled, cored and chopped


Topping

3 tbsp chilled butter

1/3 cup brown sugar

½ tsp cinnamon

3 tbsp flour


Preheat the oven to 350°


Butter an 8x11 baking dish.


In a medium bowl combine the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, salt and baking soda.


In another bowl beat the butter, sugar and egg with an electric mixer until pale (about 2 minutes). Stir in the vanilla.


Add the apples and the walnuts to the flour mixture. Mix in the butter and sugar mixture. Combine well.


Spread the batter in the prepared dish.


In a small bowl combine the topping ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle on to of the brownie batter.


Bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown and slightly firm in the center.
